of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains - Almaty, Kazakhstan
About location
As the largest landlocked country in the world, Kazakhstan has a lot more going for it than its sheer size and vast oil reserves. The country, which is larger than all of Western Europe, is blessed with abundant natural resources, stunning landscapes and a vibrant cultural melting pot. In addition, it is the most economically developed nation in Central Asia, defying the typical expectations associated with countries not yet ventured to by masses of tourists.

Almaty
Located in the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau Mountains, Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan, as well as a historical and cultural hub. Thanks to its geographical location, the city is surrounded by several national parks and lakes.

Kazakhstan is often described as a land of deserts, vast steppes, yurts, and camels. The country also gets associated with the old caravan routes of the Silk Road, along which were often little but dried-up steppes to keep the travelers entertained during their long journeys.

Trip to the Lake Issyk
Departure to the location in the early morning

Issyk Lake, which is also known as Esik lake, is a bright-colored alpine lake enclosed by beautiful mountain nature and lush forests together with vast flower fields and can be found just a bit south of the village Esik in Southeastern Kazakhstan. The lake is located at an altitude of 1760 meters above sea level in the Issyk gorge of Trans-Ili Alatau and is located only about 70 km east from Almaty.

The birth of Lake Issyk occurred about 10 000 years ago when after a powerful earthquake caused a mountain to collapse and a large fragment ofrock fell into the river valley resulting in 300 m high natural dam. Issyk Lake is fed with water from the melting glaciers of the Zailiyskiy Alatau.

Trip to the Bear waterfall
Lunch at the Trout farm, dinner and overnight in a guest house in the village
Bear Waterfall (also called Medvejiy Waterfall) is a favorite place to conduct tours. The route to it is easy and short - only one kilometer along a well-equipped path. The waterfall is located in a deep rocky niche, on the southern slope of the Karash Ridge, where the Bear Stream flows. The height of the waterfall is 29 meters. The waterfall got its name because of a family of bears that live here.

Trip to the Lake Kolsay
Breakfast, lunch in the village
Kolsai is a system of 3 lakes located a 300 km drive southeast from Almaty, at Kungei Alatau mountain ridge which is one of the ridges of the northern Tien Shan. Kungei Alatau is famous for its lakes, which are the real gems of the Northern Tien Shan in Kazakhstan.

The Kolsai lakes were formed due to a powerful earthquake that took place here in the late 19th century. Huge amounts of stones and soil flooded the gorge in several areas and formed natural dams to the river that was running at the bottom of the gorge and thus creating the lakes.

The color of all the lakes changes according to the weather from dark blue to turquoise or green and the water is very clear in all of them.
Trip to the Lake Kaindy
Dinner, overnight in a guest house in the village
Almaty Province is famous for its picturesque places and one of them is the charming lake of incredible beauty - Kaindy. It is located within Kolsay Kolderi National Park. Its name means “abundant in birch trees”, despite the fact that birch groves are located a few kilometers away from Kaindy. The lake is surrounded by spruce trees. The trunks of ancient submerged spruce trees rise above the water surface: they were flooded when the lake was formed. The most interesting thing is that the lower branches are surprisingly well preserved, hidden from the sun and wind by cold mountain water.

Despite the humid and hot climate of the Almaty Province, the weather is cool near Kaindy Lake even in summer. Be sure to wear warm clothes and comfortable shoes. "This picture's worth a thousand words" - this is how we can describe Kaindy Lake. Visit this incredible place and see it with your own eyes.

Trip to the Bartogay Reservoir
Breakfast, lunch in a guest house in the village
Chilik River is gaining strength between the Ile Alatau and Kungey Alatau Mountains. This area is home to the most breathtaking natural wonders of the Almaty Province. But people decided that Mother Nature hadn’t given them enough lakes and created one more – Bartogay Reservoir.

Bartogay Reservoir was constructed on the Chilik River in 1986. This massive irrigation facility was the last major project of Soviet Kazakhstan. The lake stretches from north to south for 6 km (3.7 mi), the width is 3 km (1.9 mi), and the average depth is 25 m (82 ft). The lake is popular among fishers as it is inhabited by European carp, crucian carp, and trout.

Bartogay Reservoir is a great example of how human intervention can create places of great beauty. What also draws travelers to the lake is a huge spillway about 100 meters (328 ft) high that is in no way inferior to a real waterfall.
Trip to the Charyn Canyon
Departure to the city in the evening
Dinner at a roadside cafe. Payment for dinner by each participant separately (~4-7 euros)
The Charyn Canyon (or Sharyn Canyon) is part of the Charyn Canyon National Park and stretches 154km along the Charyn River, one of the deepest rivers of the Northern Tien Shan mountains.

For more than 12 million years, wind, water and sand sculpted Charyn’s red sandstone to form the wonderful shapes and shades that vary from deep orange to light brown.

Some of the cliffs resemble fantastical figures, the reason why some parts of the canyon are also called the Valley of Castles, the Devil’s Gorge and the Ghosts Gorge.
